I had read an article how easy it was to season cast iron. I in my novice state took a bit longer in doing so. I used 4 steel wool pads (and a couple beer) to get all the rust off. Then after doing so I poured Coke over the entire thing and let it dry. After it dried I rubbed it with Crisco while the oven preheated.
I preheated the oven to 425 and lined the racks with foil so the Crisco didn't create another thing for me to clean. Left in in there for about 3 hours (which is how long it took me to clean the kitchen).
After the time had expired I left it in the oven until the next day. I think it turned out better than expected and since we have more time than money it was well worth it.
